Tuesday, May 29, Cory Wong Quartet (7 pm), Vicki Mountain (9 pm, $5)

ImageThe Artists' Quarter's hottest night opens with the Cory Wong Quartet featuring Zachary Schmidt on drums, Cory J. Wong on guitar, Andy Schuster on bass and Dan M. Musselman or Kevin Gastonguay on piano  starting at 7:00 P.M.  Cory Wong has been called one of the most versatile and exciting musicians in the Twin Cities, and has been featured in several publications and websites, including NPR, MPR, and Mpls/St. Paul magazine. His song “Upstream” was the first solo guitar recording to be in the video game “Rock Band”. Cory has also recently taken over as the Production Manager for Innovative Multiemedia Studios, and Secret Stash Records.This stellar band features Steve Kenny on trumpet, Peter Schimke on piano, Billy Peterson on bass and Kenny Horst on drums.

ImageVicky Mountain has been a mainstay of the Twin Cities music scene since the mid-70s. Her performances in many musical genres include shows with jazz, swing and big bands as well as R&B, Top 40, avant garde and free jazz. She has performed regularly with her own trio/quartet as well as the Lakewood Jazz Ensemble (big band - in the 90s) and the BelaGala Big Band.  Vicky is a teacher of jazz and pop voice at MacPhail Center for Music where she is also the head of the voice department.

Wednesday, May 30, Steve Kenny & the Bastids (7pm, free) Toki Wright Galactic Soul Arkestra (9pm,$5)

  ImageA free opening performance at 7:00pm by “Steve Kenny and the Bastids”, featuring Mr. Kenny on Trumpet with Jesse Mueller on Piano, Aaron Rupar on Drums, and Adam Tucker on Bass along with some very interesting weekly special guests. Part jam session, part stand-up comedy, and part game show, the Bastids are always a rousing warm up to the evening’s fesivities.

ImageSaxophone maestro Pete Whitman gathers nine of his most talented friends for a monthly Thursday performance at the AQ with dazzling charts and musical telepathy.  Even with ten members performing, you find yourself pondering where all those perfectly-placed, sonorous pearls are coming from.  When you review the roster of first-call pros on stand, you answer your own question. Image Their 2002 release Where’s When? received a 4-star salute from Downbeat.  The all-star cast includes Laura Caviani on piano, Phil Hey on drums,Gordy Johnson on bass, Dave Hagedorn on vibes, a horn section roll call of Dave Karr, Dave Milne & Pete Whitman (saxes), Dave Jensen and Adam Rossmiller(trumpets), and Jeff Rinear (trombone).  Videos:
